The form derives from traditional Napa farm structures and is sympathetic to the adjacent William Turnbull designed home.
Our projects seek to maximize the opportunities for yearlong outdoor living offered by the benign weather of the West Coast. The location and control of the sun, wind and views create opportunities for outdoor rooms to compliment interior rooms, extending the sense of shelter and place and rooting the project and inhabitants to the surroundings. These examples are roofed structures, but subtler and effective outdoor rooms can be provided at little expense by an L-shaped home configuration facing south, by a wind screen, bench and deck or through inclusion of the shelter of an existing tree canopy.
A simple and traditional treatment of materials creates a dramatic contrast of color, light and shadow.
