Early sketches for a new modestly priced Seattle home envisioned a simple roof shape and trellis framing a private garden terrace. The two wings of the home and an existing cherry tree frame the walls of this outdoor room, extending the useable living space outside. Sheltered from wind and warmed by the sun, this south facing terrace provides the most pleasant, cost-effective and environmentally sensitive addition to available living space.
The new residence re-uses the existing footprint with its grandfathered garage location, sloping up gradually to add a new second floor. The interior is radically reconfigured to incorporate generous daylight and the backyard garden into the living spaces without compromising privacy.
Stained cedar is used at the front porch and at the two walls facing the backyard terrace where its warmth and texture can be readily appreciated and easily maintained.
On the interior ceilings are lowered and wood paneled at the entry and fireplace alcove. Windows are vented below sightlines to preserve the view without the impediment of screens. The entry opposite the fireplace alcove provides direct access to the office/guest room. The sunroom provides the hinge between the master bedroom wing and the living space wing. A skylight in the master bath highlights the tile and provides a private view of the sky. Flooring in kitchen, bath and sunroom is marmoleum in a dalmation pattern.
